Planning and design handbook on precast building structures

The first version of the “Planning and design handbook“ of fib Commission 6 on Prefabrication was published in 1994. Until now, more than 45,000 copies have been distributed in several languages, and the handbook has become an important reference tool for designers of precast buildings and for precasters around the world. Completely updated and widely expanded including recent developments, the second edition has now been published. The aim of the handbook is to promote greater awareness and understanding of precast concrete buildings. It provides a synthesis of the work carried out over the past decades by expert members of the fib C6 Commission on Prefabrication who represent industry, consulting, contracting, R& D and teaching. Ideally, architects and engineers who, perhaps, have never designed a project in precast concrete, will find sufficient information in the handbook for creating a satisfactory initial design. Professors and teachers in universities and technical institutes will find basic information for preparing lectures and tutorials on precast concrete design and construction. Master’s students who have a background in structural concrete should be able to extend their knowledge easily into the field of prefabrication.
