War of Numbers 1914-1916

The Kaiser's Navy Gone Rogue

von Hans Joachim Koerver
The author clearly shows that the Imperial German Navy, and Grand Admiral von Tirpitz in particular, ordered the sinking of the Lusitania (in May 1915) and other passenger liners (such as Arabic, Sussex).
Koerver weaves together archival sources, both German and British, as well as contemporary witness account into a baffling story.
The purpose of the book is not to „bash Germany“, but to clearly outline the militarism of Imperial Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The Imperial Navy acted independently, even against the wishes and orders of Kaiser Wilhelm II as well as the political leadership under Chancellor von Bethmann Hollweg.
This book supports the thesis that the British admiralty purposely „sacrificed“ the Lusitaniain order to force a conflict between the United States and Germany. Another important topic is the development of the British blockade.
