„How to Survive - Art as Survival Strategy“ is an exhibition and lecture project that vehemently claims the relevance of art once again. Art has the possibility to open up a third option in situations where there seems to be only yes or no, right or left. The exhibition shows artistic approaches from the 1950s to today that deal with individual and general crises in a special way. The catalogue offers a deep insight into the artworks and the curatorial concept with an introductory essay by Carina Plath (Sprengel Museum Hannover). In her essay „Integrating Crisis into Artistic Work“, Fiona McGovern (Hildesheim) sheds light on how artistic positions deal with the topic of (breast) cancer. Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez (Paris) premieres with the publishing of her manifesto „An Attempt to Hold Everything Dear,“ which addresses the challenges of the current debate on „taking care“. In addition, there are original texts of the presented artists as well as numerous statements in text and image. A list of the planned series „How to Survive: Talks“ can be found in the appendix. The catalogue is available in German and in English.
